The five factors, in order

Production is a chain, and every link is a multiplier. Cycles per hour is 3,600 divided by cycle time. Bucket capacity is the heaped rating. Fill factor knocks that down to what the bucket really holds. Swell converts the loose material in the bucket back to bank measure, which is how volume is bid. Efficiency then applies the working minutes in a real hour.

Skip any one of them and the number comes out optimistic — usually by 30-50%, which is exactly the margin on a dirt job.

Time your own cycles

Cycle time is the input with the most leverage and the one people guess at. Twenty seconds against twenty-five is a 25% swing in production and it moves your schedule by days. Stand on the pile with a stopwatch and time ten real cycles at the actual swing angle and depth — it takes four minutes and beats every published table.

The 50-minute hour

Efficiency is where optimistic estimates go to die. A machine that works 50 minutes of every hour is running well; 45 is more typical once you count waiting on trucks, moving, fuelling, breaks and grade checks. What is a typical excavator cycle time?

What is a bucket fill factor?

How full the bucket really gets, as a fraction of its rated capacity. Loose free-flowing sand fills at 100-110%, common earth around 90-100%, sticky clay 80-90%, blasted rock 60-75%. Buckets are rated heaped, and real material rarely cooperates.

Why is my real production lower than calculated?
